Spina Bifida
Spina bifida is a congenital defect of the backbone, usually of the lower vertebrae. The seriousness of the condition varies enormously, from a small area of numbness to full paralysis from the waist down, and the degree will depend upon how many vertebrae arches have failed to develop, leaving a gap into which the spinal cord pushes. As the spinal cord is, in fact, an extension of the brain because cerebrospinal fluid drainage is affected.
There are no magical cures for spina bifida, either from allopathic medical tradition or from complementary systems. There is however, much that can be done to increase the child's general health and ease any pain by working on the nervous system. The essential oils may also be used to calm or stimulate the child, as necessary. The spina bifida child benefits from an increased intake of vitamins, including all B groups and lethicin.
Massage is beneficial for both the physically and mentally handicapped child. It can also create a marvellous bond between parent and child or carer and child. use gentle stroking movements and work upwards, towards the head. Follow the general directions for massaging the physically handicapped ( see 'Aroma massage') or do a three-point massage: starting at the feet, move to the hands and then the scalp.
